Charge

On 23 May 2017 the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal considered a charge laid by the Professional Conduct Committee against Mr Peter Chum, registered physiotherapist of Christchuch (the Physiotherapist).

The charge alleged that the Physiotherapist breached conditions imposed by the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand, in that he treated and/or monitored female patients on 20 separate occasions.

Mr Chum did not attend the hearing or make any submissions to the Tribunal.  The hearing proceeded in his absence with the PCC formally proving the charge.

Finding

The Tribunal was satisfied that the charges were made out and that professional misconduct had been established in this case and warranted disciplinary sanction.

Penalty

The Tribunal censured the Physiotherapist; imposed a fine of $2000; imposed conditions on resumption of his practice and ordered that he pay a contribution of $25,000 towards the costs of the Tribunal and the PCC.
